50 Years of Forest Hollow: Part 2

Sleepy Hollow Run Subdivision

“Distinctly sited on wooded lots off Columbia Pike,” the Sleepy Hollow Run neighborhood was constructed in 1963 by Community Builders. The subdivision offered four different home models, the most expensive of which sold for $34,480. By June 29, 1963 the first section of 61 homes were sold out.

Supportive and Stretchy Makes a Debut

In the late 1960s, the supportive and stretchy fabric known as nylon (specifically spandex and lycra) was first introduced to underwear and swimwear.

NVSL in 1969

By the summer of 1969 our own Forest Hollow Swim Team was thriving and placed 5th in Division 9 of the Northern Virginia Swim League.

Once a Toll Road

Little River Turnpike, completed in 1806, was a privately owned and operated toll road connecting the cities of Aldie, Annandale, and Alexandria. One of the first toll roads in the nation, the turnpike enabled the transport of goods from western Virginia to the port of Alexandria. Convenience fees were collected at toll houses placed at five mile intervals along the road—one of which was located at the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Ravensworth Road. The toll road remained private until 1896.

Capital Beltway (with an “A”)

Nine years after final approval, the 55-mile circumferential highway around Washington was officially buckled on August 17, 1964. The three lane expressway spawned intense development at interchanges, and reshaped the social, residential, and economic pattern of the Washington area. Originally dubbed the Capitol Beltway, planners later changed the “O” to an “A.”

In honor of our golden anniversary we are dedicating the next year to sharing memories of our neighborhood, our city, and the 1960s.
