50 Years of Forest Hollow: Part 1

fhscLogo_50th_bgreen300Forest Hollow Swim Club, which opened its doors on July 3, 1965, will soon be celebrating 50 years of continuous operation. What began as a small community pool, built on land owned by the neighboring civic association, has grown into a sizable club of 300 shareholders with a competitive swim team of more than 180 swimmers. In honor of our golden anniversary we are dedicating the next year to sharing memories of our neighborhood, our city, and the 1960s (the decade of our pool’s premiere).

Then and Now

Forest Hollow Swim Club received its name from the neighboring Forest Hills (built in 1960) and the Sleepy Hollow Run (built in 1963) subdivisions. To fund construction of the pool, Forest Hills and Sleepy Hollow homeowners invested their own money (in some cases taking out a second mortgage).

SHR-FH Civic Association

The Sleepy Hollow Run-Forest Hills Civic Association was founded on June 29, 1964. The association was formed after the Sleepy Hollow Run development was built adjacent to the existing Forest Hills neighborhood, just off of Columbia Pike in Annandale, Virginia.

Forest Hills Subdivision

The tree lined neighborhood known as Forest Hills was built in 1960 and won awards for “finest home for family living” and “best community.” Created by Henry J. Rolfs, the subdivision offered four different styles of homes, all of which sold for just under $30,000.
